IIT Hyderabad was established by the Act of Parliament in 2008 with other IITs. It is temporarily based in Ordinanace Factory Medak at Yeddumailaram in Andhra Pradesh, while the permanent campus is still under construction and will only be ready by 2010.

The permanent campus is being built on the National Highway 9 at Kandi village in Medak district, the 212 hectare long campus will be operational from third academic year in 2010.
