B R Ambedkar Bihar University initially known as Bihar University was founded in the year 1952 after being separated from the Patna University. It is located in Muzaffarpur a city in northern Bihar. The university is far from the capital Patna. In the year 1960, the university got bifurcated into three University mainly Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, Ranchi University, Bhagalpur University. Again in the year 1961, it was bifurcated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and Magadh University, Bodh Gaya. Again in the year 1973, the university was bifurcated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and Mithila University, Darbhanga. In 1990, it was bifurcated into Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and JP University, Chapra.The year 1992 marked the remarkable day in the history of Bihar University when the name Bihar University was changed to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. The University recognized under University grant commission (UGC). The university is also the member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Chancellor Dr. A. K. Sriwastava and Vice-Chancellor Mr. Sudhir Kumar. The university holds its reputation in Bihar and providing courses for both undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs. The institute provides courses in B.tech, computer application, Business Administration like BBA and MBA, Industrial Microbiology, fisheries and chemistry, Journalism and Mass Communication and also courses in medical science. The institute also imparts education in yogic studies. Distance education courses are also offered.
