The origin of Bihar Yoga Bharti lays in the establishment of Bihar School of Yoga (BSY). Bihar School of Yoga was founded by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in 1963. The institute is located in Munger, Bihar. The main aim was to spread yogic education among the people of Bihar irrespective of caste, creed, sex and religion. Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati got the inspiration for the establishment of Bihar School of Yoga from Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati who established Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy in Rishikesh. The school flourished under the supervision of Swami Satyananda Saraswati. More than thousands of people were taught yoga under his guidance.

In the year 1988, Swami Niranjanananda was given the responsibility to carry out the work of Swami Satyananda Saraswati when Swami Satyananda Saraswati reached the stage of kshetra sannyasa. Swami Niranjanananda established Bihar Yog Bharati in 1994. The institute is a registered institute for studies in yogic sciences. The pattern of the school is Gurukul based. It first institute in the world to imparting a comprehensive yogic education.

The institute provides four month courses in yogic science. The course is conducted twice in a year once in Hindi and once in English. The institute holds its reputation at international level. The institute not only receives students from India but also from foreign countries especially China. Academic studies are based on Gurukul lifestyle. The Gurukul disciplines enable to build the atmosphere in which the yogic life and spirit can be experienced. Along with yogic education, the life and spirit of seva (selfless service), samarpan (dedication) and karuna (compassion) are also developed among the students (shataks). The institute provides both theoretical as well as practical training.

The minimum age required for the admission in the institute is 18 years and there is no upper limit for the age. All candidates must be physically and mentally fit in order to participate fully in the activities of the institute and attain all practical and theoretical classes. The institute provides Course in Yogic Studies - Four Months and Course in Yogic Lifestyle & Sciences - Three Months. The courses are offered only in English and Hindi. The institute holds its reputation at national as well as international level.
