Jai Prakash University

The Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya is a government university established in the year 1992. It was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of Bihar Sri Lalu Prasad. The University was established by the Government Bihar to encounter the growing need of education in the locality. The university is named after the great freedom fighter Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan. The University has served the state for almost two decade. The University supplies the need of higher quality education to the public of Saran. It located on the outskirt of Saran. It offers courses in both Under Graduate level and Post Graduate level in many subjects. Prof. S.N.Sinha was the first Vice-chancellor of University.

The student capacity of the university is about 1000 students mainly from Saran. New campus for the university is going to be established and government has sanctioned 2 crores for it. It has 21 constituent colleges and 10 affiliated colleges under it. One College of Engineering is also going to be built soon. The jurisdiction of the University extends to Saran, Siwan and Gopalganj. The University is recognized under the UGC Act and is also the member of Association of Indian Universities. The University also enhances the promotion of education among Scheduled Castes, Schedule Tribes and other weaker sections of the society.

The students are provided books from the central library of the University. The University also promotes sports and culture in the campus. The University promotes research work of highest standard. Rajendra College, Chapra established in the year 1936 is the oldest College of this University.

The faculties of the University comprises of science, arts, commerce and Social Science. The departments in science stream are Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. The departments in social science are Geography, Psychology, Political Science, History and Economics. Understanding the modern needs of professional courses, the University is soon going to launch courses in Computer Application, Business Administration, Journalism & Mass Communication and Library Information Science.

The University has proved it self in imparting quality education in Bihar.
