The Patna University is the first university built in Bihar. The University was built during British Raj in the year 1917. It is considered to be the 7th oldest University of India. At that time the University's jurisdiction extended to Bihar, Orissa, and the Kingdom of Nepal. Its jurisdiction prevailed in Nepal and Orissa until the establishment of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, and the Utkal University, Bhubaneshwar. The University received the guidance from eminent personalities of Bihar like Hasan Imam, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sachidanand Sinha and many others. The University participated in India's fight freedom. Chandeshwar Prasad Narayan Singh the Vice Chancellor of the University started post-graduate courses in the University and also recruited well trained teacher from all over India.

The present Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shaym Lal, Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Syed I. Ahson, Proctor Prof. Bhagwan Prasad Singh, Registrar Dr. Vibhash Kumar Yadav, Finance Officer Shri Jatadhar Mishra, Deputy Registrar Shri Manoj Kumar, Assistant Registrar Dr. N. Zaman, Controller of Examination Prof. Surendra Snigdh and Assistant Controller of Examination Dr. R. K. Mandal. The University is UGC recognized University.

The University has 31 post graduate centres and 13 Constituent Colleges comprising of Patna College, Patna Science College, Patna Training College, Bihar College of Engineering (Now NIT), Bihar National College, Patna Women's College, Magadha Mahila College, Patna Law College, Women's Training College, Patna Medical College and Hospital, Vanijya Mahavidyala and College of Arts and Crafts, Patna. The University has no affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction. The courses offered by the institution in Social Sciences are History, Geography, Economics, Political Science and Psychology. BSc courses in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geology and Mathematics. The medical stream comprises of MBBS, BDS, MS, MD, Physio Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Many other courses are also offered. The University also promotes extracurricular activities by organizing certain festival. The University also provides NCC training. Many N. S. S. volunteers of the University are awarded for their work.
