Rajendra Agricultural University
Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar The foundation of Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa was laid down by Lord curzon on the 1st of April, 1905. Lord Curzon expressed his gratitude for establishment of an agricultural University which would boom the growth of seeds in the area. Pusa would be the agricultural centre and would be beneficial for whole country. The institute would draw students from all around the world. There was a Phipps laboratory in the institute which the local people called as Naulakha building. The sections in the laboratory were botany, chemistry, mycology, entomology and one library. Many scientists visited the area to review the situation. Soon Lord Curzon retired and then the proposal of establishment four agricultural colleges at Sabour (Bihar), Nagpur (Central Provinces) Coimbatore (Madras) and Lyallpur (Punjab, now in Pakistan) was passed. At first the institute provided two year postgraduate diploma courses. In the year 1908, the first batch of students, for Licentiates in Agriculture (L.Ag's) and university graduated in science were admitted. The farmers were highly benefited. In 1918 Pusa got the Imperial status and was named as Imperial Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).The great Bihar Earthquake in January 1934 was like a nightmare for the institute. The earthquake destroyed the institute as well as Phipps laboratory. Bihar suffered a severe shock when the imperial Agricultural Research Institute was shifted to New Delhi. Pusa was one of the biggest centres of sugarcane research in the country.
In 1970 Rajendra Agricultural University (RAU) was established at Pusa making an important day in the agricultural research work. The constituent college of Rajendra Agricultural University are Tirhut College of Agriculture (Dholi) Muzaffarpur, Bihar Agricultural college, Sabour (Bhagalpur), Bihar veterinary college, Patna, Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology, Patna, College of Fisheries, Dholi (Muzaffarpur) College of Home Science, College of Agricultural Engineering, College of Basic Sciences & Humanities.
The under-graduate programs are B.Sc in Agriculture and Home Science, Bachelor’s of Veterinary. Science and Animal Husbandry, B.Tech. in Dairy Technology, Agricultural and Biotechnology and Bachelor of Fisheries Science. The post graduate courses are M.Sc in Agriculture, MBA in agricultural business and Ph.D in Entomology, Plant Pathology, Soil Science, Plant Breeding, Agronomy and others. It also provides Certificate Course and Post-Graduate Diploma courses.
