All India Institute of Medical Sciences

All India Institute of Medical Sciences was established in the year 1956 by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education. Our former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru dream was to build a centre of excellence in the medical sciences. All-India Institute of Medical Sciences is located in the capital of India Delhi.

The main aim to set up All India Institute of Medical Sciences was to promote highest quality of teaching and research work in medical science. It was set up to promote high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India.

At present the main functions of all-india institute of medical sciences are to enhance nursing and dental education, innovations in medical education, producing medical teachers for the country, research works in medical and related fields, to create awareness among people about health care and about dangerous diseases and community based teaching and research works.

Professor R.C. Deka is the Director of AIIMS. AIIMS runs a variety of undergraduate courses in medicine, nursing and related areas and postgraduate courses in virtually all the basic and clinical medical specialties and super specialties. Admissions to these courses are based on entrance examinations conducted all over the country. The under graduate courses are MBBS, B.Sc. Honor in Human Biology, B.Sc. Courses in Nursing, Audiometric, Ophthalmic, Techniques and Radiography. The post graduation courses are MD,MS, MDS, DM, MCh, Master's Degree in Science, Master's Degree in Biotechnology (MBiotech) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D).

50 students are admitted each year to the MBBS course of AIIMS. The eligibility criteria for students is 10+2 pass with an aggregate of at least 60% marks in Chemistry, Biology, English and Physics but in case of SC/ST and physically handicapped students only 50% marks is required.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences is the best medical institute of India. The institute was set up with the aim to enhance the medical study in India and it has achieved its goal to great extent but there is always scope for improvement.
