Indira Gandhi National Open University

Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in 1985. The University is named after former Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi. The expenditure for the establishment of the University was about 2000 crores. IGNOU is the largest university in the world. The University was established with the main aim to provide to impart education by means of distance and open education and also strengthen the human resources of India through education.

In 1989, the first Convocation was held and more than 1,000 students graduated. Indira Gandhi National Open University audio-video courses were first broadcasted in radio and television in 1990. IGNOU awarded degrees received full recognition by the University Grants Commission in 1992. In 1993, IGNOU was designated by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) as its first Centre of Excellence for Distance Education. In 1999, IGNOU launched the first virtual campus in India and the delivery of Computer and Information Sciences courses were done via the Internet.

The first Vice chancellor of IGNOU was G. Ram Reddy. The present Vice chancellor is V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai. IGNOU presently provides education to approximately 2 million students in India and 35 countries abroad. The University has twenty one schools and a network of 59 regional centres, 7 sub-regional centres, 2300 study centres, and 52 overseas centres. The University is also the member of Association of Indian Universities.

The courses offered by the University are Master's Degree in Computer Applications, Economics, History, Tourism Management, Library and Information Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, Science, Hindi, English, Business Administration, Public Policy etc. The University offers Master of Philosophy degree in Computer Science, Economics and Sri Aurobindo Studies.

On the 92nd birth anniversary of Smt Indira Gandhi, IGNOU completed twenty five years of its formation. Indira Gandhi National Open University is largest University in the world. It has achieved its goal to great extent but there is always scope for improvement. It has benefited the students of India a lot and outside India.
