Indian Institute of Technologies
Few year after independence India got its gift from the advocates of education to make India sign brightest in the sky which led to the establishment of higher learning centers including , All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Management.
Today India has 7 IITs centre to which 10 more has been added to cater the growing need and number of students. Kharagpur the oldest one got IIT status in 1951, Mumbai (1958), Chennai (1959), Kanpur (1959), Delhi established in 1961 but was conferred IIT status in 1963, Guwahati (1994), Roorkee the oldest engineering college of India (1847) got its IIT status in 2001.
In 2008 out of 10 proposed IITs, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Patna, IIT Punjab and IIT Rajasthan become functional including IIT Varanasi (converting BHU-IT), while other two established at IIT Indore, IIT Mandi will operate from 2009-2010 session.
IIT with its best education system and process stand tall with its legacy of producing the crème de la crème of talents across India. No doubt the process of getting into it is also rigorous but the fruit of all these are worth. For Undergraduate courses IIT-JEE is the gateway to get entry in these prestigious institutes. The total seats available is 5500, while GATE, JAM, CEED are other entrance test for M.Tech, M.Sc and M.Des respectively. There are also Ph.D programs, admission of which is based on both personal interviews and written tests.
Eligibility
Students securing 60% in higher secondary exams through recognized board only with age limit of 25 years while it is relaxed to 55% for those belonging to SC, ST and Physically Handicapped categories with age limit of 30 years.
Reservations
The institute has been following the caste based reservation policy since 1973 by reserving 15% seats to SC students, 7.5% to ST , also from 2008 27% reservation for OBC students has been inducted into its affirmative action as per as the new government ruling.
