Birsa Agricultural University
As the government felt that agricultural education should be promoted in the area to help to increase the crop production. So many agricultural institutes were established in Bihar like Rajendra Agricultural University. The variety of soil in the Chotanagpur and Santhal Parganas were totally different from Bihar region. Therefore Birsa Agricultural University was established in the year 1981. The University was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. The main aim of the institute was promote agricultural development in the plateau.
The faculties of colleges comprises of 35 Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry and Forestry departments, College of Biotechnology, six Directorates, three Zonal Research Stations and farms, one University farm, twelve Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Computer Centre, Central Library and others.
The administrative members of the University are Vice Chancellor Dr. N. N. Singh, Secretary to V.C. Dr. S. Chattopadhyay, Dean Dr. B. Singh, and Director Administration Sri. B. K. Sinku, Dr. N. K. Roy of Student's Welfare. The Registrar of the University is Dr. N. Kudada and others. The institute has collaboration with many national and international organizations like Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, Indian Institute of Natural Raisins and Gums (IINRG), Ranchi, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, SAIL (R&D Centre), Ranchi and National Soil Health Mission. The international collaboration are Asia Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institute (APAARI), Thailand, CIMMYT, Mexico, Mississippi State University, USA, University of Queensland, Australia, SAARC, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Rock Feller Foundation, USA.
The courses offered by the University in graduate level are B. Sc. Honours in Agriculture. The post graduate programs are Agricultural in Economics, Entomology, Statistics, Engineering and others. The department of home science comprises of Diploma Course in Food Processing and Certificate Course in Fruit Vegetable Processing Technology. The institute has helped in the progress of growth of agriculture in the locality.
