Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri

BIT Sindri formally was known as Bihar Institute of Technology is now named as Birsa Institute of Technology, Sindri. It located in fertilizer township Sindri which is about 30 km from the coal capital Dhanbad, Jharkhand. The institute is very near to the sindri railway station. Roads transports are also available at cheap rates. BIT Sindri has many AICTE approved undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The institute also receives funds from World Bank for many new undertaking projects. The institute is governed by Department of Science and Technology and Government of Jharkhand.

It founded in the year 1949. The initial name of the institute was College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in Patna. Later on in the year 1950, it was shifted to sindri with the aim to make it the first IIT of India. But due to some political reason IIT Kharagpur was made the first IIT of India. Degree programs were introduced in the year 1952 and in 1956 the institute name was changed to Bihar Institute of Technology. The institute is mostly famous by the name BIT Sindri.

BIT Sindri is spread in 650 acres (2.6 km2) of area. Each department has their own building and laboratories and some have their own libraries. The institute is well equipped with all the facilities like ATM facility, a post office, a co-operative store and many other. Director: Prof. S.K. Singh, Undergraduates: 2700, Postgraduates: 440. The institute has 25 hostels including three hostels for girls and Professors’ quarters. The club of the institute includes Leo Club, Sarjana (the college magazine), Rotaract Club, ISTE, Literary Society, Arts Club, Gandhi Rachnatmak Samiti, Model Club, Eco Club, Photographic club, Painting Wing.
