National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur was formerly known as Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur. It is one of the top 20 NITs of India. It was founded in the year 1960. . Now Jamshedpur serves as the NIT for the state of Jharkhand. NIT Jamshedpur campus is spread about 350 acres (1.4 km2) of land located about 2 km off the Tata-Seraikella Road. It is situated about 3 km from Adityapur railway station and 11 km from main Tatanagar railway station. The Kharkai River flows 2 kilometers away from the Down Hostels. There are total 11 hostels in the campus.

The administrative member are Director Dr A Mishra, Dean (Administration): Dr S N Sinha , Dean (Academic Affairs) Dr R J Singh and Dean (Students Affairs) Sr N K Narain.

The department of NIT Jamshedpur comprises of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Production and Industrial Engineering. The courses offered by the institute in M.tech are metallurgical Engineering, Material Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The institute also offers P. h d, Non-Formal B. Sc. Engineering Programs and MCA programs. The admission in the institute is based on India rank in AIEEE. The research facilities are available in Waste Management and Utilization Physical metallurgy, Corrosion Engineering, Thermodynamics, Iron and steel making, Mechanical Engineering and others.

As the institute is located in TATA industrial zone most of the students are absorbed by it. Some of the renounced companies that offers placement are TCS, L&T, PRADAN, CTS, ABB, PCS, DRDO, Infosys Tata Motors, Kanbay Tata Steel, CSC Ashok Leyland, Accenture Essar Group, Syntel Sterlite Group, Satyam Computers Hindalco, ESS NDPL, AMDOCS TCIL, HCL Timken India Ltd and HCL Infynet.

The institute has served the nation for over fifty years. It has produced great engineers who have made the country proud.
