Sido Kanhu Murmu University

Sido Kanhu Murmu University was formally known as Siddhu Kanhu University. The University is located in Dumka in Jharkhand. It was established in the year 1992 by an Act of Bihar Legislative Assembly. Jharkhand was formed in 2000 and then the University was renamed as Sido Kanhu Murmu University on 6 May, 2003. The Sido Kanhu Murmu University separated from Bhagalpur University known as Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University and an independent University was formed. The University was was granted UGC recognition under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 in May 2006. The University got the membership of Association of Indian Universities in 1993.

The University provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in arts, science and commerce. Doctoral degrees are also awarded in the faculties of Social Science, Humanities and Science. Humanities comprises of Economics, Geography, History, Home Science, Philosophy, Psychology and Political Science. Various subjects in science and arts are also offered. The post graduation courses are MCA, MBA etc. The university promotes cultural activities in the campus.

The University has reservation for schedule castes and schedule tribes. This mainly because for their upliftment of their status. It has reservation for physically handicapped people.

The university comprises 13 constituent colleges mainly Deoghar College, Deoghar , Sahibganj College, Sahibganj , Santal Pargana College, Dumka, Godda College, Godda , S.R.T. College, Dhamri , K.K.M. College, Pakur , Jamtara College, Jamtara , A.S. College, Deoghar , Rama Devi Bajla Mahila College, Deoghar , Madhupur College, Madhupur, S.P. Mahila College, Dumka , B.S.K. College, Barharwa and Millat College, Parsa.

The University has helped to promote education among backward classes. The University provides cheap and quality education among the people. It has uplifted the status of women in the state. The University has also provided jobs to many local people. Due to the social work by the students, it has helped to spread awareness of many things among the people.
