Universities in India
India has a large number of Universities including public and private situated across the country in all states and some Union Territories (UTs). Some public universities are Central Universities while remaining are State Universities. Moreover, the University Grant Commission (UGC) – the statuary government body that controls higher education – has also granted a status of autonomy to high performing institutes and departments of various universities in India that is known as Deemed Universities.
Most of the universities come under the UGC Rules and Regulation Act, 1956 while some universities have been set up under the state legislative assembly Act. For example, Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rastriya Patrikarita Vishwavidyalaya was set up by Act Number 15 of 1990 of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh.
So, we can list the Indian universities on several categories:
- Central Universities
- State Universities
- Deemed Universities
The UGC has also spotted some fake universities that simultaneously run some courses; however, there is no value of those certificates which are granted by those fake universities.
Central Universities
A Central University is considered to that university which is set up by the Central government by an Act of Parliament. The Central government is liable for establishing, distributing financial resources and managing the University. Chancellor is the top official post of the University and the President of India honours this post.
At present, there are 21 Central Universities in India, while the government has decided to set up 16 more Central Universities in 16 different states. These are: Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Goa.
Moreover, three existing state universities would be transformed in to Central Universities. These are: Dr Hari Singh Gaur University, Sagar (Madhya Pradesh), Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh), and Goa University.
